76 Percent of Women are Frequently Peek up on Her ex-Profile

Have you ever glanced at the former's lyrics account profile on Facebook or look at old photos when you and the ex still happy in your Flickr account or to find out who the new girlfriend the he? If the answer is 'Yes' means that you understand how the internet and social media did not allow us to forget the former and bold 'move on' because many times we are tempted with social media is to find out about the him.

A site called www.BreakUpWithYourEx.com hold a poll conducted 22 December 2010-5 January 2011 to approximately 1,000 respondents. This site wants to announce  'campaign to break up with former' on up before Valentine's Day. Want to dig deeper about the attachment to the former, this site held a poll before, which was the result enough to make them stunned. Apparently most of us still have not really separated from his ex, not just limited to those who dropped out of her ex. Even those who have for years to sever ties with her ex were sometimes still not really 'break', both of feeling and contacts via the Internet. Here are the results of their survey:

Fried Fish Consumption Trigger Stroke?

Nutrition experts always recommend three types of healthy foods that must be consumed namely fruits, vegetables, and fish. But, whether the fish is processed by frying is included in healthy foods?

Apparently not. At least according to a study to see the link between fish consumption and stroke. Treating Diabetes With Daily a Glass of Red Wine

A small glass of red wine every day could keep adult diabetes under control, scientists claimed last night. A new study found that the drink contains high concentrations of chemicals that help the body regulate levels of sugar in the blood.

Just a small glass of red contained as many of these active ingredients as a daily dose of an anti-diabetic drug, the researchers found. Although the study didn't look at the effects of wine on people, its authors believe moderate drinking as part of a calorie controlled diet could protect against type 2 diabetes.

However, their conclusions angered Diabetes UK who accused the researchers of making 'astonishingly bold suggestions' based on 'limited research'. The charity warned that wine was so high in calories it could lead to weight gain - outweighing any benefit.

Around 2.6million people suffer from type 2 diabetes in Britain. The disease occurs when the pancreas is unable to produce enough insulin - the hormone that regulates blood sugar - or when its insulin does not work properly.

High levels of sugar in the blood can cause tiredness, heart disease, strokes, blindness, nerve damage and kidney disease. Past studies have shown that natural chemicals found grape skin and wine called polyphenols can help the body control glucose levels, and prevent potentially dangerous spikes or dips in blood sugar.

The new study compared the polyphenol content of 12 different wine varieties. The team, from the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences, Vienna, found that levels were higher in red wines.

The scientists then studied how these polyphenols interact with cells in the human body, focussing on a particular 'receptor - or molecule that sits on the surface of cells - called PPAR-gamma - involved in the development of fat cells, energy storage and the regulation of blood sugar.

The authors showed that polyphenols in wine bind to the receptor and that a small glass of wine contains enough to rival the activity of the potent diabetes drug Avandia.

The researchers who report the findings in the Royal Society of Chemistry journal Food and Function believe moderate red wine consumption could have benefits for diabetics

'You could derive a natural extract from grape skins for the treatment of diabetes,' Professor Alois Jungbauer said.

'Also, this is further scientific evidence that a small amount of wine really is beneficial for health.'

Previous research involving thousands of people has shown that moderate drinking of alcohol can reduce the risk of diabetes type 2, he said.

'Moderate is the equivalent of a small glass each day for women, and two for men,' he added. 'Our big problem is to convey the message of a healthy lifestyle because too much wine will cause diabetes and obesity.

'If you have wine then you must reduce your intake of calories from food by the same amount.'

But Dr Iain Frame, director of research at Diabetes UK was critical of Prof Jungbauer's conclusions.

'It is very difficult to see how this limited research will have any benefit to people with Type 2 diabetes. It is a basic study into the chemistry of red wine and has no clinical relevance at this stage,' he said.

'The researchers have made an astonishingly bold suggestion based on the results of their research suggesting that a very small glass of red wine may be beneficial to people with Type 2 diabetes. This assumption is fundamentally wrong based on the evidence presented from this research.

'Previous studies have demonstrated potential health benefits from chemicals isolated from red wine. However the alcohol in wine is high in calories and can lead to weight gain, which can outweigh the benefits of these chemicals.

It is believed that coffee was first discovered by goat herders in Ethiopia because their goats started eating the beans and started to 'dance' as a result.

  2. Coffee is in fact found as a seed in berries as opposed to growing as beans and is red and round in appearance in this form. These grow on trees that grow anywhere between 10-30 feet tall.
  3. Coffee is the second most highly traded commodity in the whole world right after oil, which aptly demonstrates just how important it really is.
  4. The popularity of coffee grew greatly during the rise of Islam where coffee is highly popular, partly as a result of alcohol being illegal.
  5. Coffee beans are grown in the 'bean belt' which is the region between the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. Hawaii falls in this region and is the only American state where coffee is grown.
  6. Coffee houses were banned in England in 1675 as a result of the then King of England believing that people used them to conspire.
  7. Coffee beans are roasted at 500 Fahrenheit. After minutes, they pop and double in size at which point they are ready to be eaten.
  8. The 'Americano' preparation of coffee was invented by American GI's fighting in WW2. They order espressos with water in order to dilute the flavour. This is also where the term 'cup of Joe' comes from.

"Our results suggested that recent and rapid increases in texting volumes have resulted in thousands of additional road fatalities in the United States," Fernando Wilson and Jim Stimpson of the University of North Texas Health Science Center wrote in the American Journal of Public Health.
Drivers distracted by talking or texting on cell phones killed an estimated 16,000 people from 2001 to 2007, U.S. researchers reported on Thursday. The estimate, one of the first scientific attempts to quantify how many people have died in accidents caused specifically by mobile telephone distractions, also suggests a growing number of these drivers are under 30.
   
"Our results suggested that recent and rapid increases in texting volumes have resulted in thousands of additional road fatalities in the United States," Fernando Wilson and Jim Stimpson of the University of North Texas Health Science Center wrote in the American Journal of Public Health.
   
Wilson and Stimpson used details on road deaths from each state, on cell phone ownership and data on text message volume from the Federal Communications Commission. They got reports from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on deaths attributable to distracted driving.

"Since roughly 2001-2002, texting volumes have increased by several hundred percent," Wilson said in a telephone interview. In 2002, 1 million texts were sent every month; this rose to 110 million in 2008.
   
"Since 2001 our model predicts that about 16,000 people have died since then that we attribute to the increase in texting volume in the United States."
   
Just talking on a cell phone can distract a driver, and several studies have demonstrated that, even with a hands-free device. But Wilson said texting and using so-called smart phones that provide e-mail access and other distracting applications take the problem to a new level.
   
U.S. traffic deaths are down -- in 2009 the Transportation Department said they hit their lowest level since the mid-1950s in 2009 at 33,963. But for every 1 million new cell phone subscribers, Wilson and Stimpson estimate a 19-percent rise in deaths due to distracted driving.

"Distracted deaths as a share of all road fatalities increased from 10.9 percent to 15.8 percent from 1999 to 2008, and much of the increase occurred after 2005," they wrote.

"In 2008, approximately 1 in 6 fatal vehicle collisions resulted from a driver being distracted while driving," the report said. It found 5,870 people died in accidents attributed to distracted driving.
   
Cellphone ownership and the number of text messages sent rose sharply over the same time, Wilson and Stimpson found. Wilson said 30 states ban texting while driving, and some cities and states require hands-free devices for drivers using mobile telephones.

This week Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis said the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the U.S. Department of Transportation would work to fight distractions, encouraging employers to find ways to prevent workers from texting while driving for work. Wilson said better enforcement is needed but he cannot see an easy way to do it.

"I guess a perfect solution would be installing cell phone jammers in every car but that is not going to happen," said Wilson, who himself answered a telephone call to be interviewed while driving, but who pulled over to talk.
   
"Unlike drunk driving, where you have effective enforcement mechanisms you don’t have that with texting," he said. "The cop just has to get lucky and see you texting while driving."

Sheryl Crow, 46 (diagnosed 2006 at 44)

“I am a walking advertisement for early detection,” Sheryl Crow said in October 2006 about catching suspicious calcifications in both of her breasts on a routine mammogram. The rocker immediately postponed a tour, went into surgery, and had seven weeks of radiation, supplemented with acupuncture and herbal teas. Crow—whose engagement to cyclist Lance Armstrong ended around the time she was diagnosed—was able to skip chemotherapy because her cancer was caught so early. In March 2007, Crow (who has no close family history of breast cancer) petitioned Congress to fund research into possible links between breast cancer and environmental factors.

Cynthia Nixon, 42 (diagnosed 2006 at 40)

At first, Sex and the City star Cynthia Nixon was hesitant to reveal that a cancerous tumor had been discovered in her right breast during a routine mammogram. Nixon, best known for playing the responsible Miranda Hobbes, didn't want her condition to become public during her treatment. “I didn’t want paparazzi at the hospital, that kind of thing,” Nixon told the New York Daily News after treating her cancer with a lumpectomy and radiation. But Nixon, whose mother also survived breast cancer, decided to tell her story when she realized it might serve as an inspiration for other women at risk. The actress now serves as an ambassador for Susan G. Komen for the Cure.


Edie Falco, 45 (diagnosed 2003 at 40)

When Sopranos star Edie Falco was diagnosed with breast cancer, she kept it almost completely secret; she barely told a soul on the set of the six-season HBO hit series on which she played mob wife Carmela Soprano. Falco quietly went into treatment and emerged cancer-free—and with shorter hair—in 2004.

She says she chose to stay mum because she didn’t want any fuss or pity. “It was very important for me to keep my diagnosis under the radar...because well-meaning people would have driven me crazy asking, ‘How are you feeling?’” Falco told Health, earlier this year. Instead, she "bucked up, put on my Carmela fingernails, and was ready to work.”

Kylie Minogue, 40 (diagnosed 2005 at 36)

A misdiagnosis almost lost Australian pop star Kylie Minogue her chance to fight—and defeat—breast cancer. It wasn’t until she decided to go in for a second round of tests that doctors found the lump in her left breast. A partial mastectomy, chemotherapy, and radiation followed.

The singer has emerged from her ordeal with a plea that women should trust their gut more when they go to the doctor. “Just because someone is in a white coat and using big medical instruments doesn’t necessarily mean they’re right,” she told Ellen DeGeneres in 2007.

Jaclyn Smith, 62 (diagnosed 2002 at 56)

Seventies icon and ex-model Jaclyn Smith may be best remembered as Kelly Garrett, one of three sexy private investigators in the television series Charlie’s Angels, but lately she’s in hot pursuit of breast cancer instead of hardened criminals.

In 2002, the fashion and home furnishings entrepreneur and host of the Bravo show Shear Genius discovered a lump in one of her breasts during a routine checkup. Sexomnia: 'Sex While Sleeping'

As sleeping disorders go, this may not be the worst one. Sexsomnia patients report having initiated sex while sleeping. Now scientists have provided a hint at the prevalence of this sleep sex.

Sexsomnia was reported by 7.6 percent of patients at a sleep disorders center, researchers report today. Starting sex while asleep was more common in men (11 percent) than women (4 percent).

Previous studies have found that some people — mostly men — occasionally initiate sex with a partner and reach orgasm during sleep. They usually have no memory of such "sleep sex," as some researchers call it. They find out about it only if a partner tells them.

The results of the new survey of 832 people, all of whom had reported to a sleep disorder clinic and so do not represent the general population as a whole, are slated to be presented today at the annual meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies LLC.

"There have been no previous studies of how frequently sexsomnia occurs," said co-investigator Sharon A. Chung in the department of psychiatry at the University Health Network in Toronto, Canada. "While our finding of 8 percent of people reporting sexsomnia seems really a high number, it should be stressed that we only studied patients referred to a sleep clinic. So, we would expect the numbers to be much lower in the general population."

Unfortunately, the survey revealed, sexsomnia does not seem to replace other symptoms of poor sleep.

Symptoms of insomnia, fatigue and depressed mood were similar between people reporting sexsomnia and other patients at the sleep disorders center, Chung and her colleagues explained in a statement.

But there was a hint of what might be behind the initiation of intercourse while dozing:

Both groups (sexsomniacs and other insomniacs) reported smoking and consuming caffeine at similar rates. But people who reported sexsomnia were twice as likely as other sleep center patients to admit using illicit drugs (15.9 percent vs. 7.7 percent).

Patients seem reluctant to talk about their late-night antics.

Patients rarely mentioned sexsomnia to their doctor, the survey showed. Only four of the 63 sexsomniacs in the study had complained about it during a consultation with a sleep specialist.

"It seems that patients generally don't discuss this with their doctors," Chung said.

Sexsomnia appears to occur predominantly during confused states of arousal, experts say, and it may occur during an episode of sleepwalking. Both disorders that are classified as "parasomnias," which involve undesirable behaviors that occur while falling asleep, during sleep or while waking up.

Brain Quickly Remembers Complex Sounds

Memorizing patterns in random, confused noise is easier than it sounds. According to a new study, repeated listens alone are enough to teach the brain 100 percent accurate recognition.

"The auditory brain seems to be fairly plastic over fairly short time scales," said lead researcher Daniel Pressnitzer of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in France.

Researchers subjected volunteers to randomly generated samples of noise that were added to a base of meaningless, complex sound. First perceived as an "indistinct hiss," the background gave way to the half-second long snippets, which sometimes repeated.

After playing a noise pattern several times, the researchers discovered that listeners nearly always recognized the noise pattern when it played again. Two listens were enough for those with a trained ear, and only about 10 listens were enough for those with less experienced ears.

"It seems like a large number of listens, but you have to remember that the things we played to these people were completely unpredictable sounds. They really just sounded like: psssh," Pressnitzer told Livescience. "For these sounds that are quite complex and completely unpredictable, it's a bit like, if you were trying to memorize 20,000 random numbers, and you just have them 10 times replayed for you.”

The listeners were never told that there was anything for them to remember, said Pressnitzer.
Participants could recall the sound weeks later, leading scientists to conclude that this auditory mechanism was not simply fast, but solid and long-lasting.

"That's quite surprising, because there's really no way they could have rehearsed in their head whatever it is they wanted to memorize," Pressnitzer said. "And also, they didn't really know that we were going to call them and play them the same sounds after a little while, so it just stayed there for some reason."

The results imply that auditory neurons rapidly adapt to a given sound stimulant, and do so in a manner that plays a "very effective role in the learning of sounds," the researchers said in a statement.

Previous studies on sound and memory have focused on speech or pure tones, Pressnitzer said. Desire to fill the gap between these two “extremes,” particularly the timbre of a voice and how people learn new sounds, inspired the study.

The study's results show that auditory memory is as impressive as visual memory, but in different ways, Pressnitzer said. While complex images can be remembered without repetition, audio memory seems to require that repetition take place in order to come into effect.

"Maybe hearing is more tuned to detect repetitions or patterns that reoccur in an environment, whereas vision could take advantage of the fact that even when you take a picture you have a different time limit, so you actually produce your own active exploration," Pressnitzer said.

Water on The Brain

Failing to drink enough water can make your grey matter shrink, making it harder to think, experts have warned.

Research shows that dehydration not only affects the size of the brain but also how it works.

Just 90 minutes of steady sweating can shrink the brain as much as a year of ageing, researchers believe.

Starved of water, the grey matter is also forced to work harder to process the same information.

Over days and weeks, lack of fluid could impact on performance at work and school - and on exam results. But there is no need to panic - because after a glass of water or two the brain quickly returns to normal.

A team of scientists from around the UK scanned the brains of teenagers after an hour and a half of cycling

Some exercised in three layers of sweat-inducing clothing - including a binliner worn next to the skin, a hooded chemical warfare suit and a track suit. Others were much more lightly clad in shorts and t-shirts.

Those who were wrapped up lost around 2lb in sweat - and their brain tissue had shrunk away from their skulls.

Researchers Matthew Kempton and Ulrich Ettinger, of the Institute of Psychiatry at King's College London, said: 'We saw a general shrinking of the brain tissue.

'Fluid-filled cavities in the middle of the brain expanded and there was a corresponding shrinking of the brain tissue.

'The people who lost the most weight had the most shrinkage of the brain.'

On average, the amount of shrinkage equated to 14 months of age-related wear and tear, or the withering away associated with two and a half months of Alzheimer's disease.

The sweaty students did just as well when asked to play a computer game that tests the ability to plan and solve problems.

But the scans showed they used more of their brains to do it, the journal Human Brain Mapping reports.

Ben McGannan, of the study's funders, water cooler firm Water for Work and Home, said: 'We strongly believed dehydration was an issue affecting students' performance but we sponsored this research to give us clear evidence.'

If She Enjoys Sex

The more frequently you have sex, the more chance you have of getting pregnant. Nobody will be surprised at that - but what is surprising is that, according to various scientific studies, an average couple in Britain having reasonably regular sex have only about an 18 per cent chance of conceiving in any given month.

Interestingly, in New South Wales the chance of getting pregnant each month is significantly higher at about 24 per cent. And that's almost certainly because Australians tend to have sex more often.

In Europe, the French tend to think of themselves as the sexiest nation, but it turns out the average chance of pregnancy per month in Paris (if you are a native) is about 15 per cent. To many Britons, this may be a rather satisfying statistic.

Throughout my career as a professor at Imperial College in London treating people suffering from infertility, I have often wondered how much a couple's physical relationship impacts on their chances of conception.

It was some years ago that I first read that it is not merely the frequency of intercourse that improves a woman's chance of conceiving but also how often she has an orgasm.

Obviously, for men an orgasm is essential for a pregnancy, because without one sperm will not be released. But previously the female orgasm, though highly pleasurable, has often been thought of as being biologically useless.

Certainly, this link between satisfying sex and conception is an interesting one.

But it was with some trepidation that I first researched this idea 20 years ago. Back then, I organised a study of infertile women attending a clinic at Hammersmith Hospital.

It was one of the trickiest and most delicate pieces of research I ever conducted, as it required considerable tact and sensitivity.

We had to ask patients about the most intimate aspect of their sexual relationship, particularly about how satisfying it was and how often they had an orgasm.

One of my female medical colleagues conducted much of this questionnaire in the belief that women would be more likely to speak candidly to her.

Over many months, we built up a picture from conversations with nearly 1,000 female patients. When analysing the answers, we divided our patients into three main groups.

The first group were women who had entirely healthy and apparently fertile male partners, but despite extensive investigation had no diagnosable cause for their infertility.

The second group were women with damaged or blocked Fallopian tubes, which meant the sperm could not meet the egg and therefore fertilisation could not take place.

And in the third group were women who did not ovulate because of hormonal problems and those whose partners had a low sperm count.

It turned out that the women in the first group with completely unexplained infertility tended to say they had a rather unsatisfying sexual relationship and seldom or never had an orgasm.

These women were medically entirely normal and our tests failed to find an explanation for their childlessness.

But it was astonishing to find out that women who were infertile because they had damaged or blocked fallopian tubes were often more likely to have an orgasm than those patients in the other two groups.

How could we account for these two findings in a scientific way?

One theory is that the muscles of the vagina and the womb contract, sometimes quite vigorously, during orgasm and that way more sperm enters the uterus.

Then, after a period of relaxation, the sperm are retained. We do know that, during orgasm, a hormone is released - oxytocin, which, among other things, is associated with extreme pleasure. This hormone is also important in producing contractions of the womb.

As for why it was that a number of our patients with tubal damage reported having a particularly pleasurable sexual relationship, well, that could be down to the fact that most tubal blockage results from infection.

It is possible that the suction effect of orgasm may not just gather sperm into the uterus but also bacteria. While bacteria cannot survive long in the environment of the womb, if passed rapidly into the tubes they may set up an infection.

Evolutionary biologists tend to be rather more prosaic about the female climax.

They often suggest that the pleasure associated with having an orgasm simply encourages a woman to have more sex.

And the more she does the more likely it is that she will become pregnant and continue to ensure the survival of our species.

Linking fertility and sexual enjoyment is highly controversial scientifically, not least because many women seldom have an orgasm and many who have never had one often get pregnant without difficulty.

I am quite attracted by the theory that contractions of the womb and the fallopian tubes may help pregnancy. But after much agonising, I decided to not submit my research for publication in a scientific journal.

I was concerned that many infertile patients already feel guilty about their failure to conceive.

This guilt is not rational, but it is understandable. They feel they have failed their partner or that they may have damaged themselves in some way - or that they may be causing their own infertility.

Publication of an inconclusive study like this might encourage infertile patients to feel even worse about themselves when there was no clear evidence that orgasm improves fertility in the majority of women.

All, this was only a questionnaire based on conversations with patients. No matter how carefully done, it was possible our patients were not always being totally candid about this intimate aspect of their lives.

Ultimately, we shelved our study. We could not prove what we thought we might have found and we needed to do more work on our theories.

But other research areas were more pressing and we never returned to this vexed issue.

I still feel that doing more research in this difficult area would be worthwhile.

Two decades on, we are much more open about the issues surrounding infertility.

Hopefully some sensitive and keen researchers may consider revisiting this important aspect of human sexuality.

Babies Know The Difference between Good and Evil at Six Months : a Study reveals

At the age of six months babies can barely sit up - let along take their first tottering steps, crawl or talk. But, according to psychologists, they have already developed a sense of moral code - and can tell the difference between good and evil.

An astonishing series of experiments is challenging the views of many psychologists and social scientists that human beings are born as 'blank slates' - and that our morality is shaped by our parents and experiences.

Instead, they suggest that the difference between good and bad may be hardwired into the brain at birth.

In one experiment involving puppets, babies aged six months old showed a strong preference to 'good' helpful characters - and rejected unhelpful, 'naughty' ones.

In another, they even acted as judge and jury. When asked to take away treats from a 'naughty' puppet, some babies went further - and dished out their own punishment with a smack on its head.

Professor Paul Bloom, a psychologist at Yale University in Connecticut, whose department has studied morality in babies for years, said: 'A growing body of evidence suggests that humans do have a rudimentary moral sense from the very start of life.

'With the help of well designed experiments, you can see glimmers of moral thought, moral judgment and moral feeling even in the first year of life.

'Some sense of good and evil seems to be bred in the bones.'

For one study, the Yale researchers got babies aged between six months and a year to watch a puppet show in which a simple, colourful wooden shape with eyes tries to climb a hill.

Sometimes the shape is helped up the hill by a second toy, while other times a third character pushes it down.

After watching the show several times, the babies were shown the helpful and unhelpful toys. They showed a clear preference for the helpful toys - spending far longer looking at the 'good' shapes than the 'bad' ones.

'In the end, we found that six- and ten-month-old infants overwhelmingly preferred the helpful individual to the hindering individual,' Prof Bloom told the New York Times.

'This wasn't a subtle statistical trend; just about all the babies reached for the good guy.'

Two more tests found the same moral sense.

In one, the researchers devised a 'one-act morality play', in which a toy dog tries to open a box. The dog is joined by a teddy bear who helps him lift the lid, and a teddy who stubbornly sits on the box.

They also made the babies watch a puppet cat play ball with two toy rabbits. When the cat rolled the ball to one rabbit, it rolled the ball straight back. But when the cat rolled it to the second rabbit, it picked up the ball and ran off.

'In both studies, five-month-old babies preferred the good guy - the one who helped to open the box; the one who rolled the ball back - to the bad guy,' said Professor Bloom.

When the same tests were repeated with 21-month-old babies, they were given a chance to dish out treats to the toys - or take treats away.

Most toddlers punished the 'naughty rabbit' by taking away treats. One even gave the miscreant a smack on the head as a punishment.

Although the studies appear to show that mortality is hard-wired into babies brains, some psychologists urged caution.

Dr Nadja Reissland, of Durham University, said babies started to learn the difference between good and bad from birth.

'Everything hinges on who decides what is normal,' she said. 'By saying pushing the ball up the hill is helpful, the researchers are making a moral judgement. The babies might just prefer to see things go up rather than down.

'In the other test, perhaps the bear closes the box to prevent the dog from getting in there because there is something dangerous inside. It is like a mother keeping children out of an area where there is something harmful.'

Sex From Young Age Increase Risk of Cervical Cancer

The study shows that women who first had sex at the age of 20 years will increase the risk of cervical cancer later in life.

Do You Really Need A Mastectomy?

If you've been diagnosed with breast cancer, it may have been suggested you have a single mastectomy in the other breast or a double mastectomy, but is this the best approach? I was diagnosed more than a decade ago with infiltrating intraductal breast cancer and I turned down all conventional breast cancer treatment including chemotherapy, radiation and surgery and chose an alternative route. No single or double mastectomy either. And I'm still in excellent health today.

The trend is alarming as more and more women are removing healthy breasts because they are panicked, are in fear of breast cancer returning or migrating to the other breast.

I'll discuss a recent study showing why mastectomy is not saving lives in a moment. However, what is alarming to me is that there is still breast tissue left in the chest wall and by removing healthy breasts there is still tissue that could already contain cancer cells or be available to them.

There is very little evidence that proves that women live longer or survival rates increase by removing their breasts after a diagnosis of breast cancer. A recent study of statistics published in a national medical journal read by doctors found that 5000 women in one state, between 1995 and 2005, who had cancer in one of their breasts, chose to have the other breast removed. These women already had breast cancer. They were not women who tested positive for the BRCA-1 or BRCA-2 gene mutation type of breast cancer, where prophylactic removal is more common.

This trend is disheartening. Especially because there is absolutely no data, or no evidence that mastectomy or removing one or both breasts in a breast cancer patient, improved survival rates or helped them live longer. It appears that many women are doing this in panic mode. A cancer diagnosis creates panic and fear.

The statistics show that there is only a 10 percent to 15 percent chance of developing cancer in the other breast in the upcoming 20 years following the diagnosis. In addition, because one has already been diagnosed with it, breast cancer would likely be caught very early. So why remove a healthy breast?

I chose not to have any chemotherapy, radiation or surgery. They wanted to remove some of my lymph nodes and give me aggressive chemo and radiation. In addition, this was to be followed by five years of the drug Tamoxifen.

I turned it all down! Of course I immediately changed my lifestyle and radically changed my diet. And I felt healthier in the month and months and years to follow and ever since then - more than ten years ago. If you've had a breast cancer diagnosis and are considering mastectomy either single or double, please do plenty of research before you commit. Based on the studies, research and data today there doesn't seem to be a good reason to do it.

Menopause and Cancer

AFTER the menopause, a woman may experience changes that may or may not be related to decreased hormone levels. These include serious conditions like cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis and cancer. Early measures taken may prevent or detect these conditions early.
There is no increased risk of cancer with the menopause. Cancer is not as common as heart attacks or strokes. There are different types of cancer that affect women. All women, especially senior women, must be aware of the common cancers that affect them.

Breast cancer is the commonest cancer. It is feared most by women and is frequently the focus of the media so much so that many women think it is a very common condition.

In fact, its incidence is much less than cardiovascular disease or osteoporosis. When detected and treated early, it is very amenable to treatment.

Death rates have declined in recent years. The five-year survival rate for localised cancer is more than 90%. The factors that increase the risk of breast cancer include:

Age. The risk increases with age reaching about 10% by 80 years of age.
Heredity. A woman's risk is increased if her mother or sister had the condition, especially if before the menopause.
Early age of first period.
Never been pregnant.
Obesity
Alcohol consumption.
Sedentary lifestyle.
Long term ( ie.more than five years) hormone therapy (HT) has been reported to be associated with a slightly increased risk of breast cancer.
Radiotherapy for other cancers.

Cervical cancer is very treatable if detected early with five-year survival rates of more than 90%.

It is thought to be caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, which is acquired through sexual intercourse. Most HPV infections do not result in cervical cancer. The risk of HPV increases with early sexual intercourse, multiple partners, smoking and HIV infection. Neither the menopause nor the use of hormone therapy increases the risk of cervical cancer.

Endometrial (uterine) cancer is very treatable if detected early with five-year survival rates of 95%.

The risk factors of endometrial cancer include:

Early age of first period.
Late menopause.
Never been pregnant.
Obesity.
Diabetes.
Hypertension.
Use of oestrogen without progestogen.
Use of tamoxifen.

Previous pregnancy and the use of the birth control Pill appear to provide some protection against endometrial cancer.

Ovarian cancer is not common yet it causes more deaths than any other cancer of the reproductive organs, mainly because it usually presents at an advanced and less curable stage. One of the main reasons for its late detection is the absence of symptoms in the early stages. If detected and treated early, five-year survival rates can exceed 90%.

The risk of ovarian cancer increases with age, especially in women who have never been pregnant or those with a family history of breast or ovarian cancer. The risk is lower in those who have been pregnant, used birth control Pills or had tubal ligation. Neither the menopause nor the use of hormone therapy increases the risk of ovarian cancer.

Lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer death in women in many developed countries. The increase parallels the increasing number of women who smoke cigarettes. As such, it can be expected to pose a problem for Malaysian women in future.
Colorectal cancer is not associated with the menopause but with increasing age, a family history of the cancer, colorectal polyps, inflammatory bowel disease, physical inactivity and smoking.

Most cancers can be successfully treated today. The most important factor in treatment success is early detection. Regular check ups and the early seeking of medical attention is advisable for not only menopausal women but all seniors.
