I can take the pressure says Capello

Fabio Capello insists he is strong enough to cope with the pressure of England's do-or-die clash with Slovenia on Wednesday.

With speculation mounting Capello will quit if England fail to secure a place in the knockout stages and his players openly questioning a hard-line strategy that appears ill-suited to spending weeks away in camp, the Italian has to try and keep a cool head and get his tactics right. It is not going to be an easy task but Capello insists he can cope.

"I am strong enough to deal with it," he said. "It is no problem for me. I work hard and I prepare everything. That is important. Every morning I look in the mirror and ask whether I have worked and whether I have studied everything. Yes I have. For this reason I will accept the criticism and everything. I don't know what the result will be but I do know the result is the most important thing."

"I don't understand why during a game we don't change the rhythm or the speed. We are really slow. "
Fabio Capello, England manager.

Yet getting that result has proved elusive so far. The senior Football Association figures in South Africa insist they remain solidly behind Capello and are not even thinking about the worst case scenario.

"We are absolutely focused on Wednesday night's game," said Club England managing director Bevington last night. Nothing else is in our minds. We are fully supportive of Fabio Capello and the England team and believe they will have the total support of the England fans in Port Elizabeth this week."

Yet even Capello admits he is at a loss to explain precisely why his team have been performing so poorly. Just like his very first game in charge, against Switzerland at Wembley in February 2008, the Italian has seen some excellent training ground performances completely fail to be transferred into a match situation.

"Yes, it almost feels like all the work of the last two years has been for nothing," he sighed. "I am not happy because we have worked hard for 20 days. You see all the things during the training. Then on the pitch it is completely different. As a manager, when that happens it is no good. I don't understand why during a game we don't change the rhythm or the speed. We are really slow. At this World Cup if you don't run or press or fight it is difficult to go forward."

Manchester United cancel Jakarta match

(CNN) -- English Premier League champions Manchester United have cancelled the Jakarta leg of their 2009 pre-season tour of Asia as a result of the bomb attacks in the Indonesian capital.

A presidential spokesman confirmed that eight people were killed as blasts tore through two luxury hotels - the J.W. Marriott Hotel and the Ritz-Carlton Hotel - the second of which the squad were due to stay in for their time in the city.

The club announced the move in a statement on their Web site: "The Directors have informed the Indonesian Football Associaition (FA) that the Club (Manchester United) cannot fulfil the fixture in Jakarta.

"We are working on a revised itinerary outside Indonesia with the promoters, and will make a further announcement when these decisions have been made.

"We are deeply disappointed at not being able to visit Indonesia and thank the Indonesian FA and our fans for their support. Our thoughts go to all those affected by the blasts," the statement added.

The tour of Asia by the Red Devils consisted of four fixtures, starting with a game against a Malaysia XI on Saturday, with further ties against an Indonesian All Star side on Monday, FC Seoul in South Korea on July 24 and Hangzhou Greentown in China two days later.

It was anticipated the Gelora Bung Karno stadium would be filled to its 88,000 capacity should the game have gone ahead in Indonesia, such is the popularity of the three times European champions in the region.

United manager Alex Ferguson was reported by the British Press Association as saying the explosions were "terrible news" and it was "very disappointing" their friendly fixture had to be cancelled.

"It was abit of a shock for all of us, we had no other option but to safeguard our players."

The Scot went onto say: "We got the news as we landed and it is very disappointing. I have never been to Indonesia before and I know the Indonesian FA have worked very hard on this.

"It is terrible news but we have taken what I believe to be the right decision in terms of safeguarding our players," PA reported.

United's chief executive David Gill said: "We have taken the appropriate advice. We have met with the British High Commission who are highly experienced in these matters.

"It is not a decision we have taken lightly. We were aware of the situation but we spoke to the right people and received the correct advice," PA reported.

Federer claims record 15th grand slam title

(CNN) -- Roger Federer claimed his record 15th grand slam crown and sixth Wimbledon title as he beat Andy Roddick 5-7 7-6 7-6 3-6 16-14 in an epic final on Sunday.
Federer had been tied for grand slam wins with Pete Sampras, who watched the spellbinding clash on Centre Court.

The second seed was pushed to the very limits by his big-serving opponent, with the climax coming in a marathon 30-game fifth set.

Leading 15-14, Federer forced his first match point against a tiring opponent who mishit a forehand to see his own hopes of victory cruelly ended.

It was the first time that sixth seed Roddick had dropped his service in a match lasting four hours and 18 minutes.

The triumph will see Federer reclaim the world number one spot from Rafael Nadal, who beat him in last year's final but missed this year's championships through injury.
Federer, who won his first French Open crown last month, told BBC Sport that he was aiming to win yet more grand slams.

"It's been quite a career and quite a month for me. I don't play tennis to break records and it doesn't mean I'm going to stop playing. I hope to come here and play some good tennis in the future," he said.

Roddick led by a set and had four set points in the second set tiebreaker before the Swiss maestro clawed his way back into the match in the space of a few moments.

Federer saved three set points with gutsy play, but on the fourth Roddick had only to put away a comfortable backhand volley, only to put it well wide.
It proved a crucial mistake as Federer quickly won the next two points to seal the breaker 8-6 and level at a set all.

With both men dominant on their own service, the third set also went to a tiebreak and this time it was Federer who made the running, claiming three set points.

Roddick saved two on his own service, but Federer duly closed out the set on the third.

But the American, who had broken Federer in the 12th game to claim the opening set, repeated the feat in the fourth game of the fourth as he forced him to net a volley.

Secure on his own service, Roddick had no trouble in holding to claim the set 6-3 and make sure the final went the full distance.

Both men were again dominant on their serve in the fifth set and it became a question of who would blink first.

Federer had a break point in the fourth game, while Roddick, who had put out home hope Andy Murray in the semifinals, set up two break points at 8-8.

But Federer decisively saved them both as the marathon headed towards its thrilling climax.

Sampras, who had flown in from California especially for the final, believes Federer is the greatest player in history.

"I think you have to give it to him," said the 14-time grand slam winner.
"The critics say (Rod) Laver, and (Rafael) Nadal's beaten him a few times in majors.
"But he's won all the majors, he's won 15 now, he's going to win a few more. In my book he is (the greatest)."

In the final action of the Wimbledon fortnight, Mark Knowles and Anna-Lena Groenefeld paired up to win the mixed doubles final as they beat top seeds Leander Paes and Cara Black, 7-5, 6-3.

Owen Complete Transfer to Manchester United

(CNN) -- Former England striker Michael Owen has completed his shock free transfer move to Manchester United on a two-year contract.
The former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Newcastle forward completed a series of stringent medical tests on Friday evening before signing for the Premier League champions.

Owen, 29, had spent the day at United's Carrington training complex as the terms of his free transfer were thrashed out, after his contract with relegated Newcastle United expired at the end of last month.

Owen had undergone a medical examination on Thursday to assess the troublesome knee which had sidelined him for much of his stay at St James' Park.

Despite his previous injury problems the deal represents little risk to United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who has been a long-time admirer of the 29-year-old.

"Michael is a world class forward with a proven goalscoring record at the highest level and that has never been in question," Ferguson told the club's official Web site.
"Coming to Manchester United with the expectations that we have is something that Michael will relish."

It is believed Ferguson has struck a pay-as-you-play deal which will involve a basic weekly wage enhanced by bonuses.

The player has taken a significant pay cut from the £110,000 ($180,000) a week wages he was reported to be on at Newcastle, for whom he scored 10 goals as they were relegated to the Coca-Cola Championship last season.

But it is the lure of playing Champions League football again which excites Owen -- as he tries to force his way back into the reckoning with England coach Fabio Capello.

Owen admitted United's approach came as much as a shock to him as it did the rest of football. "I had just begun to talk to other clubs when out of the blue Sir Alex phoned me on Wednesday afternoon.

"He invited me to have breakfast with him next morning during which he told me that he wanted to sign me. I agreed without a moment's thought.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for me and I intend to seize it with both hands. I am now looking forward to being a Manchester United player and I am fortunate that I already know so many of the players here.
"I missed pre-season last year and am pleased that I will be starting at Carrington from day one. I want to thank Sir Alex for the faith he has shown in me and I give him my assurance that I will repay him with my goals and performances."

Owen's capture is United's second signing of the summer following that of Wigan winger Antonio Valencia -- and goes some way to replenishing their attacking options after the departures of Carlos Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo.
