The Magnetic Appeal Bra

It's an everyday routine that can leave a woman tied in knots. But the battle to fasten and unfasten a bra using those tricky hooks and eyes could be over for good. Selfridges is selling a collection of French lingerie in which the fastenings are replaced with tiny, almost invisible magnets.

The clasps at the front of the bra are designed to pop open with the simplest of manoeuvres. The bra comes with a matching pair of ‘clip-on, clip-off’ knickers, which have magnetic strips at the sides.

But any men who think these are the best inventions since the remote control should beware – they don’t come cheap. Designed by Parisian Laetitia Schlumberger, the ‘Dement’ – French for ‘insane’ – underwear starts from £165 for a bra and knicker set.

Selfridges’ lingerie sales are up 50 per cent on last year, with risque brands up a further 20 per cent, as women and men embrace the Cheryl Cole-inspired fashion for bondage-style underwear.

The department store is stocking Dement’s black lace bodice and briefs set, as well as a lacy black and navy design, although more are due to arrive ahead of Valentine’s Day. Helen Attwood, head buyer for lingerie at Selfridges, said: ‘Fumbling to unhook a bra strap can actually be quite a passion killer.

‘This is the biggest innovation in the underwear market for years. Those moments wasted with the bra fumble can now be put to much better use.’
