Avoid UV Rays, Prevent Skin Cancer

Peoples are encouraged to be more wary of exposure to ultraviolet (UV) which is one risk factor for skin cancer. Contact with the sun too long between the time of day to evening should be avoided, because it can increase the risk of skin cancer.

According to the Medical Secretary of the Indonesian Cancer Foundation (YKI) Adityawati Ganggaiswari, humans in Indonesia are relatively more exposed to ultraviolet light each day in the long term. But the people of Indonesia, including quite fortunate to have many causes of skin pigment or blackish brown. Pigment in the skin's function is to protect the body from ultraviolet rays.

Even so, exposure to UV rays, especially between 10.00 am to 16.00 still not be considered trivial. Adityawati notice, is not recommended to bask in between those times, because UV can damage skin and lead to cancer.

'UV rays is one among several other risk factors that can lead to cancer such as smoking, obesity, alcohol and infectious disease,' he said in Jakarta on Tuesday (02/02/2011).

Among the various types of cancer in Indonesia, the current skin cancer is one type of cancer that continued to show an increasing incidence from year to year.

In developed countries, melanoma is a type of skin cancer are more often attacked young women aged 26 to 29 years. A lot of skin damage associated with sun who attacked a young woman comes at teens.

In Indonesia, the prevalence of skin cancer is still relatively low compared to other types of cancers such as cervical cancer, lung or breast cancer. GLOBOCAN 2008 research data published in December 2010 and for example shows, the estimated number of cases of skin cancer is still under 5,000. Indonesia Cancer Foundation, said Adtyawati, invites the public to be more concerned and aware of the threat of exposure to ultraviolet. 'People can avoid UV exposure by being smart and familiar, namely, among others, by using a hat, umbrella, sunscreen and clothing covering the arms. This is very meaningful for the prevention and life in the future, 'he said.
